Meet Dr Rubina Azam/My Story

Dr Rubina Azam with Dr Andrew Weil at the Arizona Center for Integraive Medicine on her Fellowship Graduation Ceremony

Hi I am Rubina Azam MD. I am a Board-Certified and Fellowship Trained Integrative and Holistic/Functional Medicine Physician as well as American Board-Certified Pediatrician practicing medicine for the past 20 years in Florida. Most people know me for my reputation as an excellent Pediatrician, however, not many people know the story of my own health and my own journey leading me to integrative and Functional medicine.

Functional medicine is my personal journey—a tale of a doctor who unexpectedly became a patient, baffling everyone in the quest to uncover the root cause of my health issues

My journey towards reclaiming my health began as a tale of two contrasting chapters. In the first chapter, I reveled in a life filled with hard work, long hours, ER calls, and the joys of being a dedicated mother. My healthy genes and lifestyle choices were a source of pride, and I embraced life to the fullest. However, approximately nine years ago, my narrative took an unexpected turn.

The second chapter unfolded with the sudden onset of Acne and Fatigue while working long hours in my practice and rounding at the Hospital, which prompted a visit to a Dermatologist. I followed their recommendation of a several weeks course of oral antibiotics to combat the Acne problem. Little did I know that this would mark the start of a bewildering decline in my health. Each passing day brought a new and baffling symptom: loss of appetite, insomnia, peculiar allergies, fatigue, and a profound lack of focus that made me feel as if I had developed ADD. My zest for life waned, replaced by joint pain and swelling, hair thinning, and overwhelming tiredness.

Despite undergoing thyroid function tests and many more conventional labs that yielded normal results, I found myself trapped in a medical puzzle with no apparent solution. I consulted Rheumatologists, Gastroenterologists, and various Neurologists, each offering different diagnoses and prescriptions. Medications, including sleep aids, potent anti-rheumatic agents, corticosteroids, and more, failed to alleviate my suffering.

It was only when I recognized that my symptoms stemmed from a biological imbalance—an upheaval of my natural hormones and chemicals—that I began to glimpse the path to healing. Frustrated with conventional medicine’s limited answers, I embarked on a journey into the realms of Functional and Integrative medicine, seeking the least invasive treatments with minimal side effects to restore my well-being.

Months of diligent effort, extensive testing, and exploration were required to uncover the truth. I was contending with an autoimmune disease where my body produced antibodies against its own tissues. Years of stress, unhealthy eating habits, and exposure to environmental toxins had taken their toll, exacerbated by repeated rounds of antibiotics prescribed for my cystic acne. These antibiotics had damaged the delicate lining of my gut and annihilated its beneficial bacteria, causing my immune system to turn against me.

Additionally, I uncovered strong food allergies, including dairy and gluten, which exacerbated my condition. To regain my health, I delved into the healing potential of nutrient-rich foods and dietary modifications. I overhauled my diet, bidding farewell to gluten, dairy, chemicals, and processed foods. Alongside dietary changes, I employed supplements to rebuild my health, restore my energy, and quell the inflammation in my gut.

My story is a testament to the resilience of the human body and the power of knowledge and determination. Through the transformative journey of self-discovery and holistic healing, I have not only reclaimed my health but also found a newfound purpose in guiding others on their own paths to wellness.

This pivotal moment marked a profound turning point in my life, one that would not only reshape my personal health and my family’s well-being but also redefine the course of my career and forever alter the way I approach medicine

I decided to pursue further training in the field of Integrative and Holistic Medicine. It was a great honor when I was offered a Fellowship Position in the Department of Integrative Medicine with Dr. Andrew Weil at the University of Arizona. This was an intense 2 years Training Program, that taught me all aspects of Integrative medicine and its clinical application to various illnesses. I learned the importance of mind, body, and spirit in the treatment of a person as a whole. I studied extensively the healing power of foods and natural remedies. This was an amazing and eye-opening experience for me. I knew that my knowledge and training is not just to help myself and my family but to help my community and everyone around me.

I have obtained Board Certification in Integrative and Holistic Medicine and have graduated successfully from my Fellowship program. My Integrative Medicine Fellowship training and Board Certification has given me the ability to extend my Integrative and Functional medicine care to Patients of all ages. I am not just a Primary care doctor anymore, I have become an Integrative and Functional medicine expert.

My illness was a blessing in disguise, it taught me lifelong lessons, it changed my view of medicine and it inspired me to become even a better doctor. A doctor who helps heal the whole body rather than suppressing the symptoms with medications.

Philosophy

Our philosophy and belief is that every illness is basically a disturbance of normal physiology somewhere in the body caused by and triggered by various environmental agents. Dr. Rubina Azam will work with you to find the root cause of your illness, and once that root cause is identified and removed, the downstream effects can be reversed as well.

We believe in an integrative medicine approach where medications are prescribed as necessary and when needed along with a lifestyle modification consisting of better nutrition, exercise, sleep improvement, and stress reduction.

Mission

To treat every patient as a whole person, to understand the system, not just the symptom, to find the underlying cause before prescribing any supplement or conventional medication.

Vision

To educate families on how to look at their bodies and minds and spirits as one integrated system and to understand that any imbalance in one of these three areas will cause symptoms that may not be treatable with conventional medications and pharmaceuticals. To enable every patient to understand their body and their mind and their needs and identify their strengths and weaknesses.
